GEO is technical SEO with a new name on the badge.

"Generative Engine Optimisation" is what happens when people who never did SEO discover crawlability, structured data and entity clarity - and conclude they have invented a discipline. Below: the eight claims we hear most, and what each one actually is.

ILLUSTRATIVE
// eight myths

What GEO says. What it actually is.

None of this is an argument against the work. Being retrievable, extractable and consistently described across the web matters more every quarter, and we sell exactly that. The argument is against the label - because a made-up discipline is how you end up paying twice for the same audit.

Tap a claim. The answer is the same each time, in different clothes: crawl, render, index, structure, entities, authority.

Claims we hear every weektap a claim
What it actually isAI answer engines do not have a private copy of the web. They retrieve from search indexes - Bing's for ChatGPT, Google's own for AI Overviews and Gemini - and then summarise what they retrieved. If a page is not crawlable, renderable and indexed, it cannot be retrieved, so it cannot be cited. That is the entire premise of technical SEO, and it has not changed.
What it actually isLook at what every GEO checklist actually asks for: a direct answer near the top, one idea per heading, defined terms, tables for comparisons, claims with sources. That is on-page SEO as it has been taught since featured snippets arrived in 2014. The machine reading it changed; the writing advice did not.
What it actually isllms.txt is a proposed convention. At the time of writing no major AI search engine has said it reads one. What does control access is the same thing it always was: robots.txt, the user agents you allow, whether your content exists in the raw HTML or only after JavaScript runs. Crawl and render, again.
What it actually isThey run a list of prompts on a schedule and log which brands are mentioned. That is rank tracking against a probabilistic results page. Useful - we do it - but it is a tracker, not a new science. Anyone selling it as proprietary insight is selling a spreadsheet with a monthly fee.
What it actually isStructured data with stable @id references linking your organisation, people, services and reviews is how we have helped machines disambiguate entities for over a decade. It is not a hack, it is the specification. The people calling it a GEO discovery simply had not implemented it before.
What it actually isThis comes from the 2023 academic paper that coined the term, which tested tactics like adding citations, quotations and statistics inside a research harness. Strip the branding and it says: make specific, verifiable, well-sourced claims. Search quality guidelines have described exactly that for years. It is quality, not a lever.
What it actually isYou cannot place an ad inside a retrieved answer. What you can do is become the source that gets retrieved, and be consistently described across the third-party pages the engine trusts. That is digital PR, entity consistency and citation building - link building with the incentives finally pointing the right way.
What it actually isRead their deliverables. Crawler access, rendering, structured data, entity clarity, content structure, third-party mentions, share-of-voice tracking. That list is a technical SEO scope of work with the word "AI" in the header. The work is real. The novelty is not.

// what actually moves it

Four things decide whether an AI engine cites you.

Each one is an SEO problem with an SEO fix. This is the order we work them in.

01

Retrievable

The engine's crawler can reach the page, the content exists in the HTML it receives, and the page is in the index it retrieves from. Crawl, render, index.

02

Extractable

A model can lift the answer out: one clear claim per section, defined terms, tables where the question is a comparison, facts stated plainly enough to quote.

03

Consistent

Your name, offer, location and people say the same thing on your site, your profiles and every third-party page the engine cross-checks. Entities and schema.

04

Trusted

Other sources the engine already relies on mention and describe you. Earned coverage, not bought placements - authority, under its old name.

The honest version

We sell this. We just don't rename it.

Our AI visibility work is a technical SEO scope with a prompt-tracking layer on top: crawler access, rendering, an entity graph, answer-first content, citation building, and a monthly share-of-voice figure per engine. Same audit, honest labels.

  • AI prompt & citation baseline across engines
  • Crawler access, render and index review
  • Linked schema and entity consistency
  • Answer-first content, citation building, monthly reporting
